Kate Ingold

ECHO/LOCATE gathers small groups of careful observers to explore what lies beneath the surface of an artist’s practice. Hoping to generate a refreshing, hospitable experiment in critical perception, invited participants will work to locate both themselves and the artist in an ongoing historic, philosophical, spiritual, and art-historical discourse. Listening collectively for the echo of the artist’s position among these enduring features of human experience ought to provoke, expand and enrich the perspectives of all. In locating the artist, we also locate ourselves. These experiments occur semi-regularly at the site of an artist’s actual work.

This event’s featured artist is Kate Ingold and the conversation will be led by Linnéa Spransy and Christian Gonzalez Ho. In her studio practice, Kate gives reverent, tender attention to those fractured, minute gestures of longing scatted in the flotsam of everyday life. She harvests and hoards them, unsure sometimes, what the attraction may be. Nevertheless compelled, she mines the earnest and emotive quality of her frail materials for their enduring strength of empathy, embedded, often, in the absurd. These urges extend into poetic expression –writings that weave in and out of visual gestures. In this way, Kate provokes stirring questions not least of which is the concluding line of a poem accompanying the series called 21st century retablo “…what can be believed when all is formed of belief?”
