Nathaniel Mary Quinn

ECHO/LOCATE gathers small groups of careful observers to explore what lies beneath the surface of an artist’s practice. Hoping to generate a refreshing, hospitable experiment in critical perception, invited participants will work to locate both themselves and the artist in an ongoing historic, philosophical, spiritual, and art-historical discourse. Listening collectively for the echo of the artist’s position among these enduring features of human experience ought to provoke, expand and enrich the perspectives of all. In locating the artist, we also locate ourselves. These experiments occur semi-regularly at the site of an artist’s actual work.

This event’s featured artist is Nathaniel Mary Quinn. In a recent interview, when Quinn was asked if his paintings are portraits, he responded by saying that his painting practice is “more of a psychological excavation of the internalized world of a human being” than a quest to represent one’s physical likeness. Quinn’s oeuvre is fueled by visions he receives that combine memories from his past with current references. The fragmented figures rendered in gouache, oil, pastel, and charcoal are at once familiar and also ambiguous.
